Message from the Headteacher

The highlight of the newsletter this week is the FOBISIA Battle of the Bands competition that took place in Malaysia. Last weekend six of our Year 12 students, who make up the band “Coalesce” travelled to Kuala Lumpur to take part in this competition. Ms Neina and Mr Lewis accompanied them on this trip and came back full of praise for our students who represented our school so well. A report and pictures can be found below in this newsletter.

Events like the Battle of the Bands give our students the opportunity to develop their interests and passions. Their time at school extends beyond the academic, and our afterschool ECA programme also promotes this. All these activities and events play a vital role in the holistic development of students, fostering the development of our Ivalues and inspiring our students to be intrepid.

I will take this opportunity to show our appreciation to our teachers who are so generous with their time in supporting weekend events like the Battle of the Bands. Without their commitment to our students, we would not be able to take part in so many of our extracurricular events: FOBISIA Sports, MUN, Music competitions, and more.

Celebrating Student Success

FOBISIA Battle of the Bands - Congratulations to ‘Coalesce’

Our Year 12 rockstars travelled to Kuala Lumpur to participate in the eagerly anticipated Battle of the Bands Competition. Tilly, Asia, Dino, Austin, Flynn and Ohm who form ‘Coalesce’, were able to enjoy time visiting Putra Mosque, KLCC mall and the Petronas towers, as well as take the opportunity to collaborate with music industry experts and talented musicians from all across Asia. On Friday at Nexus International School, there were wonderful music workshop sand keynote speakers which inspired all the bands and performers to be their absolute best at the concert which would follow on Saturday. The standard of performance this year was incredible and all the bands in both the KS3 and Upper Secondary categories should feel very proud. Ms Neina and Mr Lewis were in the audience as ‘Coalesce’ performed and the atmosphere was electric! The feedback for Tilly, Asia, Dino, Austin, Flyn and Ohm was tremendous and the praise received from other schools was fantastic. They have dedicated so much time to perfecting their songs and they have also shown great imagination in how to lift their level even further. The BOTB success is a great reward for them, as they ranked in the Silver Category amongst so many other talented performers.
Well done to ‘Coalesce’ again - they have achieved so much and they continue to be outstanding role models for all our younger students at HHIS.

Highlights from the week

On Friday 17th of January, Year 3 and 4 went on an unforgettable trip to the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), filled with excitement, discovery, and inspiration! This incredible opportunity allowed the children to get up close to a variety of amazing animals while learning about their individual backstories. The children discovered where many of the animals came from, why they had been rescued and what the WFFT had done to help them, which really enriched their understanding, furthered their learning and challenged their perceptions of the world, as part of our current topic ‘Humans on Habitats: How can we balance our impact?’.

The visit was both educational and inspiring as the students explored how the WFFT works tirelessly to protect and conserve wildlife. Through engaging discussions, as well as thoughtful questioning, the children discovered how they, too, can make a difference in preserving the natural world. It was a day of wonder, growth, and fun that left everyone eager to help protect the planet and its precious creatures!

Year 12 Collaborative Sciences Project

Our IB students visited Kaeng Krachan National Park and this provided an excellent opportunity for students to work in teams and develop their practical skills. The park’s diverse and dynamic environment served as a perfect setting for hands-on research and sample collection, encouraging students to embrace inquisitiveness and actively seek answers to their own research questions. This unique experience not only encouraged teamwork but also inspired students to engage deeply with scientific inquiry. We explored the park comparing the different factors that affected the water composition in a range of places. Looking at the diverse wildlife and beautiful scenery, our students had the opportunity to use Science to investigate the local area around them and link it to the international dimension and varied perspectives in their different subjects.

Y10 Science and Geography Trip

Year 10 students headed to the hills to Khao Nang Phanturat Park to practice Scientific Investigation in the wild, using different skills to investigate the world around them. Working with the park rangers, we were able to catapult seeds into the forest and support the regrowth of the trees. Students also had the opportunity to discover and trial some specialised equipment before enjoying a trek through the woods to a lovely shaded glen, named the Lady's Glass Slipper. This gave the students the opportunity to compare a more wild part of the park to the cultivated centre.

Student Leadership: Table Tennis Tournament

It has been a fantastic start to our Term 2 and our Secondary students have been enjoying playing table tennis every lunchtime. We have a very popular ECA and Jimmy in Y12 has now innovated a HHIS tournament for our students. This involves over 50 players from Year 7 - 13 and teachers as well. We have seen a number of closely played games with notable highlights including Mike in Y8 beating Mr David and Malek in Y7 narrowly losing to Jimmy. The level of play is very impressive and we hope this first tournament will inspire more students to get involved in future weeks.
We are also asking if there are any parents who would like to compete against the tournament finalists? We would like to host the finals with a big audience which will see parents, teachers and students compete. Please can parents who want to play, please contact Jimmy and Mr Lewis. More details will then be shared: Lewis.c@huahinschool.com

Good luck to all players!
