Message from the Head of Secondary
|
|
|
2025 has been a super start for opportunities beyond the classroom with a number of trips in the local area, Bangkok and also internationally. Last week, we celebrated our Year 12 rockband ‘Coalesce’ who performed in Malaysia and this week we wish to congratulate our HHIS sports players.
|
At the weekend, the HHIS Hawks were in action at the Bulldog Swimming Cup held at Bangkok Prep International School. This was a big step for many of our swimmers taking part in their first long course competition. Following the guidance of some of our more experienced students, the Hawks achieved a huge haul of PB times. There were medal-winning performances for Ben and Emily Thomas and a fantastic team spirit and camaraderie on display. A huge well done to all of our swimmers and a thank you to parents for your support.

We have also hosted our friends from Somtawin for U16 basketball games and U18 football games. It has been great to see the development of these teams as their teamwork builds and all the games have been played with competitiveness and commitment, whilst also maintaining a friendly and sporting atmosphere. A big well done to all HHIS and Somtawin players and we look forward to lots more action in the year ahead as we continue to forge ties in our local sports community.

The IBDP is an advanced 2-year course of study that provides students with excellent preparation for university, employment and life. On 3-4 February 2025, we look forward to welcoming two members of the IBO, Mr. Arvind Kumar Chalasani and Mr. Ryan O'Brien. During their stay in Hua Hin, they will be meeting with members of the HHIS community (students, teachers, counsellors, the school leadership team, and parents) to understand more about the school. We look forward to sharing highlights and news following this visit.

Highlights from the week

Service Learning and Partnership
Year 9 students have now started their weekly visits to our partner school, Ban Nong Krathung. Y9 students are leading guided reading and maths sessions with the younger children and this service learning project is very much in line with our CAS programme that our IB Diploma students in Y12 and Y13 enjoy. Planning and reflection are at the core of the experience and we are very proud of Year 9 for their good preparation and positive approach. It was lovely to see students from both schools collaborate and enjoy games and learning activities together. There are also plans for sporting fun to follow and HHIS students can also look forward to learning about the eco garden at Ban Nong Krathung School.

Year 5 and 6 Visit to Baan Phu Thara
Students in Y5 and Y6 are currently learning about Sustainable Construction and the opportunity to visit Baan Phu Thara was a fantastic experience. The homes in this development incorporate environmentally conscious design and construction, and our students enjoyed their time learning more about innovative building techniques and seeing how developments can be designed to suit their environment. Our students were highly engaged, asking thoughtful questions about the materials and design choices that help reduce environmental impact. A big thank you to the Baan Phu Thara team for their warm welcome and for sharing their expertise. This visit has already sparked some great discussions back in the classroom and our students are inspired to use their new knowledge as they continue their research and begin designing their own environmentally friendly homes.

IGCSE PE and IB Sports at Hua Hin Crossfit
Our Year 10 IGCSE PE and Year 12 IB Sports Science students pushed their limits during a trip to CrossFit Hua Hin. They tackled weightlifting movements, powered through a CrossFit workout, and then enjoyed some well-deserved recovery time in the ice bath, sauna, and steam room. This experience allowed students to apply their anatomy knowledge and deepen their understanding of athlete recovery techniques in a real-world training environment. Students were also able to explore a new and dynamic approach to fitness and for many of our learners, this was their first time trying CrossFit. It was absolutely fantastic to see their enthusiasm as they embraced each challenge and used the feedback and encouragement to improve and develop.

Music at Lunchtime!
One of our KS3 Bands, 'Daydream Division', has been busy in rehearsals this week. It was great to see our younger students collaborating with Year 12 musicians, where they were guided with instrument techniques, melody lines and rehearsal practice. What better way to spend a lunch time than making music!

Student and Staff Table Tennis
What an amazing and action-packed tournament it has been! Lots of close games and some surprising knockouts along the way! There were over 50 players participating and this has inspired even more students to play. A big thank you to Jimmy in Y12, who innovated and coordinated this opportunity. A big well done to everyone who took part and we now look forward to the next event. Can anyone rival the top 3 players of this tournament?
