Message from the Headteacher

Next week we are celebrating Literacy Week, to coincide with UN International Mother Tongue Day. International Mother Language Day is an annual celebration to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. While the language of instruction at HHIS is English, we are proud to celebrate and nurture the many languages spoken, written and read by our school community. Our students are multilingual and this linguistic diversity is their superpower! Research shows that children learn best when they have a strong foundation in their first language, and when that language is valued. We encourage families to speak, read, and share stories in their home language(s), as this enriches a child’s linguistic abilities and strengthens their academic success. With this in mind the activities planned for next week are designed to foster a love of reading in any language. We are always looking to expand our collection of books in languages other than English, and the library would be delighted to accept any donations.

We will also be hosting a Paragon Asia Book Fair in the canteen, which will be open to parents at the following times:
Monday to Thursday: 7:45-8:15 am and 3:30-4:00 pm
There is a 20% discount on books and games for the HHIS community.

At the end of next week, HHIS is hosting the FOBISIA Tennis Invitational at True Tennis Arena. Schools from around the Asia region will be attending. The Under 10s and 11s competition will take place from Friday 28th February to Sunday 2nd March and the Under 13s, Under 15s and Over 15s the following weekend. We are looking forward to exciting competitions and hope to see many of you there cheering on the players.

And finally I share a message from Xavier, one of our IB Diploma students, who is planning to organise a blood drive with the Red Cross. To move forward with this initiative he needs to establish that we will have at least 30 participants. Please complete the form below if you might be interested.

Highlights from the week

Duke of Edinburgh

As we concluded last half-term, Y10-13 DofE participants celebrated the end of their journey through the Kaeng Krachan area. The Bronze group had hiked for two days while collecting data for their group goal. The Silver groups showed great endurance by hiking for three days while carrying enough food to sustain themselves and gathering information for their team research questions.

Hornbills were seen at both campsites, and the second campsite even had a nesting box for hornbills to support the local population growth of these amazing birds
With many stories to tell about their experiences, students will now focus on preparing their presentations that they can share with their peers at future assemblies. These reflections serve as an essential part of their assessment to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh's International Award and help to celebrate a tough journey that will always be remembered! A big well to everyone involved and thanks to Mr Alasdair, Ms Liv, Ms Lucy and Mr Steven for all their support to all our of DofE students.

A Message from the Bright Dawn Foundation

We write to express our gratitude to Hua Hin International School for everything you do for the Bright Dawn Foundation, a charitable organisation in Hua Hin dedicated to giving less well off rural primary school children a hand up, not a hand out. We are grateful for your successful fund-raising initiatives, both at the school level and to those individual parents who have very generously supported us independently.

In recent years, our collaboration has increased significantly with teachers and students assisting our less privileged students in English, reading, maths, music and book swaps.
We also look forward to the painting program to be undertaken at one of our schools and the football matches that are being arranged. It has been heartening to watch HHIS students from different years come out to Nong Kratoom school to help; each time the HHIS students arrive, the excitement on the faces of the Nong Kratoom students has been palpable.
From a Bright Dawn perspective, this has all been an outstanding success. Hopefully this is also the case for HHIS students helping them with their Global Perspectives studies or CAS objectives as well as gaining an understanding of what life holds for kids in rural areas outside the city.

We are also delighted that Julie Way has joined us on a voluntary basis in an educational consultancy role, which as you would imagine, is already reaping discernible benefits. We consider ourselves honoured and lucky to have developed this relationship with your school.

Thank you all once again.
The Bright Dawn Team.

Service Project at Ban Nong Krathung School

In the recent weeks our Year 9 students have been visiting Ban Nong Krathung School and they have been accompanied by HHIS staff, Malou (graduate HHIS IB student) and also Tia in Y12. They have been working in collaboration with teachers at Ban Nong Krathung to support reading and maths for the younger children. HHIS students also got the chance to visit the eco garden at the school and there have been a number of positive highlights for everyone involved. Our Year 9 students have reflected and said that they and their new friends have grown in confidence working together. It was not easy to begin but everyone has worked together to share languages and play games as a team. It was pleasing to hear that the most memorable part of the project so far has been the new connections made. This project will continue in the forthcoming weeks and there are further ideas for how all our HHIS students can support Ban Nong Krathung and other schools supported by the Bright Dawn Foundation.
