Message from the Headteacher

Our eight I Values are the statements that guide our school and represent the characteristics and attitudes we develop in our students. This week our newsletter is highlighting one of those values: “Inspired”. At HHIS we “gain inspiration from those within our own community and notably from each other. We are motivated by the efforts and ideas of those around us, fostering an inspired and inspiring drive for learning.”

In assembly last week, students from Years 3 to 9 were able to learn from Ms Liv and Ms Laura who have set themselves a challenging target of competing at the HYROX BKK Competition in May 2025. The assembly shared the inspiring achievements of both teachers and students, and promoted goal setting, working together and the power of small steps and consistency. We want our students to set big goals and step out of their comfort zone and it is inspiring to see our teachers also pushing their limits.

Some inspiring HHIS community members feature in our newsletter as do reports from two of the primary class “hook days”. Hook days take place at the beginning of a topic, or unit of learning, to inspire the student and to spark their interest in their new topic. The activities are designed to get the students excited, engaged and asking questions that will guide their learning. You can read more below about how years 5 and 6 students were inspired by chocolate and dragons!

A couple of reminders:

Inspiring Students!

Hin in Year 5 will complete The Helvellyn Challenge!

Hin in Year 5 has set an incredible goal to attempt to summit Helvellyn from Patterdale, Cumbria, UK. He will ascend via the extremely challenging and perilous 'Striding Edge' before descending via the 'Swirral Edge' route…and he is doing this on 27th July 2025, which is his tenth birthday! While taking on this challenge, Hin is raising money for Jungle Aid. He welcomes all sponsorships and donations, however large or small. This challenge is completely financed, meaning 100% of your generous donation will go directly to Jungle Aid. Additional information and sponsorship forms will follow soon.

Year 8 Project: The Bright Dawn Colour Run – How Bright Will Your Colours Shine!

Our Year 8 students have been researching and discussing ‘inspiration’ as part of their learning theme. They designed their own questions and invited Mr. Lewis to a hot seat session so they could gain further insights into his marathon running journey. Mr. Lewis shared his positive mindset, detailing how he began running. Key takeaways from his talk was the powerful message: 'ENJOY, and you will ACHIEVE.' and that if you aspire to accomplish something, simply remind yourself: ‘START TODAY’. This message has deeply inspired our students and has played a significant role in shaping their Term 3 project, ‘The Bright Dawn Colour Run – How Bright Will Your Colours Shine!’ This will be a whole community event where we can work and run together to raise funds for The Bright Dawn Foundation. More details about this fun run will be shared in the future.

Highlights from the week

Year 5 Hook Day: Trust, Teamwork, and Tasty Discoveries!

Year 5 kicked off their Innovative Inventors unit with a chocolate challenge that put their senses—and teamwork—to the test! After exploring packaging from local and international brands, they took on a blind taste test, relying on their partners to guide them. There were some clear winners… and definite losers—spicy mango was not a favourite! A fun mix of trust, collaboration, and surprising flavours to start an exciting new unit!

Year 6 Hook Day - Dragonologists

This week saw the start of Dragonology in Year 6. The prospective dragonology students assembled in the Dragonology Conference Room in the world-renowned School of Dragonology. Here, they were met by Professors Orwyn, Greythorne and Emberholt, all graduates of the School of Dragonology and experts in the areas of dragon nutrition and diet, adaptations and habitats.

The prospective students all received an envelope, welcoming them into the School of Dragonology in which they discovered what dragon house they had been allocated - Thunder, Fire, Frost or Water. Each student painted their symbol onto their house flag and their own shirt which they will use throughout the following 6 weeks as they embark on their Dragonology journey, becoming experts themselves and hopefully graduating as a Dragonologist at the end of the term.

U18 Basketball - ASB 2025 Tournament

A big well done to our Senior Boys who took part and thoroughly enjoyed their experience at the 2025 Tournament hosted at American School Bangkok. It was a tough 2 days of competition and our Hawks Team suffered a couple of early setbacks with player injuries. The team pulled together really well and worked hard in defence and offence. As well as enjoying a number of fast paced matches, the boys also took part in a free-throw tournament and Sam Y13 placed second overall. It has been great to hear their stories this week and it is clear they enjoyed the time away with friends and teachers. Many thanks to Mr Mike and Mr Martin for supporting this opportunity and we are delighted that sports at HHIS continues to grow!
