Secondary at HHIS

Welcome to Secondary for 11-18

The Secondary Phase at HHIS allows our students to develop their independent study skills and broaden their experiences and gain many opportunities. Our classrooms provide an enthusiastic and energetic environment for all our learners to achieve their very best. Students are fully guided by highly qualified and experienced teachers and receive regular feedback on their progress. Our students’ achievements are celebrated enthusiastically and we are committed to achieving high standards whilst at the same time maintaining a broad and balanced curriculum – this includes providing a wide range of learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom through after school clubs, links with business, trips and digital learning.

In Secondary, there are three phases of study. These are KS3 for students 11-14, IGCSEs for students 14-16 and IB studies for 16-18. All students are fully supported by their form tutors who provide daily pastoral guidance and they are further supported by our Wellbeing coordinator.

Key Stage 3

During Year 7 to 9, every individual is able to experience a wide range of new challenges both in and out of the classroom, so they can make continued progress and achieve their own personal successes. There is a broad range of subjects and opportunities for all our learners and through their studies, students acquire new skills, build knowledge and develop the understanding detailed in the English National Curriculum.

In Key Stage 3 academic subjects begin to evolve into the ‘separate subject model’ of secondary school, where each subject becomes its own discipline taught by a specialist teacher. The subjects enjoyed by our students include English, Maths, Science, Art, Music, Physical Education, Humanities, Languages and Computing. All subjects are timetabled on the weekly timetable for our students and despite visiting different classrooms, the learning for the subjects is linked through the context of central learning themes.

These themes are regularly developed to respond to the changing world and the central ideas tie subjects together and inspire our students to draw their own meaning and reflect on the experiences they gain. This ability to reflect is an essential skill in developing as a learner and students are well supported. This enables all of our students to further develop their confidence and approaches to learning, ensuring they are well prepared to take the next step towards future IGCSE and IB studies.

Key Stage 4 and IGCSEs

It is an exciting time for our students as they enter Key Stage 4 and begin studying Cambridge IGCSEs. All our subjects have been designed to suit the needs and interests of our students, so that they can enjoy a broad range of academic challenges and achieve success.

Through the variety of subjects that students study and the practical nature of work embedded throughout the curriculum, students develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. Our students make good progress studying in Year 10 and 11 and everyone is able to make an impact in the classroom and in the community. There are a variety of opportunities to make a real difference and we are proud of the contributions our students make. As well as developing exam skills, our students develop leadership qualities that are integral part of our school I Values.

As a school we pride ourselves on our caring environment, where students, parents and staff work together with the common goal of achieving success. We welcome any questions you may have and we will be delighted to support you in selecting the future subjects that you wish to study. Key Stage 5 and IB Studies

As an accredited IB World School, HHIS is very proud to work in partnership with the International Baccalaureate and deliver an outstanding educational experience. Students in Year 12 and 13 are inspired and supported to develop their own ideas so they can provide positive change for themselves, their communities and the world. The Diploma Programme is an advanced 2-year course of study that allows our students to individually design their studies, providing them with excellent preparation for university, employment and life.

All students are supported to participate in and design their own individual journeys through the IB Diploma Core Curriculum. This curriculum is made up of three components: 1) Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS); 2) Extended Essay (EE); 3) Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Students also choose six subjects, selecting a subject from each group (1-6). Subjects can be studied at different levels, known as Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). Students should select 3 HL and 3 SL subjects. The main difference between SL and HL is the amount of content studied. For Higher Level, students study more lessons and complete more work.

We welcome any questions you may have and full Information for the various subjects is included on our website: https://sites.google.com/huahinschool.com/ibdiploma/
